Export of pepper, cashew, rubber: Exports increased but value decreased

In 2018, agricultural exports continued to receive positive signals with the growth of commodities such as rice, vegetables, etc. It contributed significantly to the sector’s export value throughout the year. However, exports of industrial crops such as pepper, cashew, rubber … decreased value.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in the first ten months of this year, agricultural, forestry and fishery exports are estimated at $ 32.6 billion, decrease 8.1% over the same period last year. Major agricultural products were estimated at USD16.4 billion (up 2.3% ); The export value of the fishery sector was estimated at USD 7.24 billion (up 6.2%) and the export value of animal husbandry was USD 0.46 billion (up 9.5%).

Exports increased but value decreased

While many agricultural commodities such as rice, vegetables … have positive signals, a series of industrial plants such as pepper, cashew, rubber .. not very good. Export turnover of these items has increased, but the value decreased. Notably, there is a value of export items have decreased compared with the same period in 2017.

According to the latest statistics, cumulative export of pepper in the first ten months of this year was 207.000 tons and USD 676 million. It increase 7.9% in volume but decrease 33.4% in value over the same period last year 2017. Main markets for pepper in Vietnam are the US, India, and Pakistan. Export of pepper to these markets tended to increase in volume but declined in value due to low prices. The average pepper export price in the first 10 months is $ 3,266 / ton. It decrease 38.3% over the same period in 2017.

Similar with cashew nuts export, the quantity increased but value decreased. In the past 10 months, cashew nut export was 301.000 tons and turnover was 2.78 billion USD. It increased by 3.39% in volume but decreased by 3.47% in value over the same period in 2017. The United States, Netherlands, and China are still the three biggest cashew importers of Vietnam, accounting for 42%, 13%, and 12% respectively of export value. By the end of October, the average export price of cashew nuts was about $ 9,303 per ton, down 5.2% over the same period last year.

The estimated volume of rubber export in 10 months reached 1.21 million tons and 1.66 billion USD, up 13.4% in volume but down 7.3% in value over the same period in 2017. For 9 months at the beginning of the year, export turnover of Vietnam to key markets such as China, Malaysia … all decreased compared to the same period in 2017, except India and Indonesia. Remarkably, the average price of export rubber in October was $ 1,293 / ton. It slightly up 0.66% from September but down 15.7% compared with $ 1,535 / ton of the same period 2017.

The solution to the export of industrial crops in Vietnam

In fact, the consumption of agricultural products is quite uncertain. Farmers produce products with high quality. But the price is not as expected.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has seen these weaknesses. They are gradually improving. Vietnam imported 70% raw material for the cashew. The yield of Vietnam cashew, though compared to the world doubled, but compared with other crops, still need to rise. Vietnam needs to take advantage of other waste from cashew …

Currently, MARD is directing the development of agricultural products according to national advantages, regional advantages. The most important is the linkage, the application of science and technology. Only in this way can productivity increase, increase value added of agricultural products as well as the income of farmers.
