Over the past five years, the agricultural, forestry and fishery sector has recorded considerable growth both in terms of turnover, market, and product structure. However, it’s not simple to keep up the growth momentum, towards sustainable agricultural, forestry and fishery export in the context of economic integration more and more widespread today.
The agriculture export market growth, expands, and change structure
In the period of 2013-2017, export turnover of agriculture, forestry, and fishery increased sharply to $ 157.49 billion, an increase of 51.2% over the same period last 5 years ago. The total export value reached $ 36.52 billion, an increase of $ 4.34 billion in 2017. In 2018, the figure is expected to reach $ 40-40.4 billion. Vietnam has 10 export items worth $ 1 billion or more. They include 5 items (shrimp, fruits, cashew nuts, coffee, and wooden furniture). Their export turnover is over US $ 3 billion.
The important achievements of the process of agricultural restructuring are the expanding market of agricultural, forestry and fishery products. In addition, the structure of export products grows in the direction increasing the proportion of products with high quality. Specifically, Vietnamese agricultural products have been present in 180 countries and territories.
Vietnam agriculture products
MARD has actively cooperated with Diplomatic, Industry and Commerce to expand the market and improve the quality and competitiveness of agricultural exports. This way facilitated the negotiation process for removing technical barriers to trade. It diversifies the market, still keeps the traditional markets easy and expands the export to high-value markets.
According to MARD, the structure of export products has been shifted more effectively. It towards increasing the proportion of advantageous commodities and favorable markets as well as processed products, quality, and added value. Up to now, 50% of export seafood is processed; 80% of export rice is high-quality rice. As a result, the export price of Vietnam rice has been the same price of rice exported in Thailand.
Increasing capacity for international integration
Labor productivity, quality, and competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products are still low. In addition, the forecast of supply and demand is weak, so there is a situation where agricultural products are stagnant, consumption is slow, prices fall, affecting production, income, and life of Famer …
Although Vietnam’s export markets are wide and diverse, the focus is on some major markets. The trend of diversification of export market is slow, so there are potential risks of trade barriers and lack of initiative when there are changes of those markets. Specifically, furniture exports to the United States accounted for 40.7%; Seafood exports to the US accounted for 17.6% and the EU accounted for 17.4%. In addition, the food safety and hygiene of agricultural products in Vietnam is also a big challenge (the EU food safety and hygiene warning system have placed Vietnam on the list of countries with the high warning) …
The key export market in four months of 2018
In the next time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should innovate and develop appropriate and effective forms of production organization, encourage. Besides that, they need to develop the forms of cooperation, and consumption of agricultural products.
In addition, MARD should study and evaluate the impacts of international integration, propagation, and dissemination of information. So that localities, enterprises, and farmers have appropriate production and business plans; promote trade promotion and market development. MARD should assist enterprises in legal issues in dealing with trade disputes, minimizing risks in international integration; improve research capacity and forecast supply and demand of agricultural products.
